How are children exposed to chemicals?
Chemicals can enter children’s bodies through their skin, the air they breathe, and what they eat and drink.
We all come into contact with chemicals every day. Many human-made chemicals have useful properties and are often found in fabrics (including clothing, furniture, and carpeting), plastic items, food, and water. Other contaminants are naturally occurring and are often found in our everyday surroundings.

Why test for particulate matter?
Particulate matter, or PM2.5 has been linked to numerous adverse health impacts, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and negative impacts on lung development. These pollutants can cause or exacerbate many conditions that reduce children’s quality of life, such as asthma and allergies; impact neurodevelopment and cognitive ability; and increase health risks later in life, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.
The real-time, continuous PM2.5 measurement data will be used to understand spatial and temporal distribution of air pollution experienced by young children in the study area. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why test for ozone?
Ozone and its precursors NOx, NO2, and SO2, have been linked to numerous adverse health impacts, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and negative impacts on lung development. These pollutants can cause or exacerbate many conditions that reduce children’s quality of life, such as asthma and allergies; impact neurodevelopment and cognitive ability; and increase health risks later in life, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.
The real-time, continuous O3, NOx, NO2, and SO2 measurement data will be used to understand spatial and temporal distribution of air pollution experienced by young children in the study area. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
